| Background | Dexamethasone facilitates weaning from respiratory support and reduces the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a major cause of mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) in preterm infants, leading to increased use of postnatal corticosteroids. As survival among extremely preterm infants (EPIs) has improved, the use of corticosteroid has increased. However, concerns remain regarding adverse neurodevelopmental effects. |
| Aim / Hypothesis | Aim: Few studies have investigated postnatal corticosteroid use during hospitalization in EPIs across different gestational age groups born in Korea and its association with outcomes according to corticosteroid exposure. This study aimed to evaluate patterns of postnatal corticosteroid use in relation to BPD incidence and determine whether corticosteroid type, and route of administration are associated with long-term growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes at corrected ages of 18–24 months and 3 years. Hypothesis: EPIs with lower gestational ages are more likely to be exposed to postnatal corticosteroids. Poor growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with lower gestational ages are associated not only with lower gestational age itself but also with postnatal corticosteroid exposure and other prematurity-related morbidities. |
